We are finishing renovation on a new studio space at our home. ![]() I also enjoy carving the surfaces of the functional wares to add texture which when glazed creates a multi-toned color effect which enhances the works and elevates their simple status to one that is more artistic and less craft. That part of my work is where I test new ideas and use techniques from my 2 dimensional studies, like printmaking to enhance the surfaces. My functional pottery keeps my production going as I spend much of the summer selling at craft fairs. I have been back to making more sculptural work in the past year, which I enjoy as an artist with a message and voice. It is also unpredictable in results, which is something else I love about these two firing methods. Both firing techniques are focused on the additives in the fire and the nature of the fire and what happens as things burn and smolder changes the surface effects of the works in ways that are not possible with traditional glaze firing. Along with wood firing, I enjoy pit-firing my work. It is a great experience to work with a group of like minded ceramicists and learn new things together. Over the past two years I have found a guild of woodfire potters and have begun the wonderful learning experience of wood firing my work.
